Project 1: Designing Labels and Paperboard Structures

For this package design project, I chose to do a new product line for Ole Smokey Moonshine which is a distillery established in four locations in more tourist type towns of Tennessee. This brand grows from the mountain roots of Tennessee and they are proud to show it. They do this by creating a brand image that uses a lot of cozy rustic themes and imagery involving the Tennessee mountains. For my user persona, she a proud Tennessean woman who is looking for a gift that could also act as a souvenir that was safe to give to folks who either were or weren’t a consumer of alcohol by still captured the same feel that the Ole Smokey Distilleries had when you walked into them. With these elements in mind, I moved forward in my package design process. I decided I wanted to make individually packed, single 16oz mason jar candles, these would be protected by brown confetti packaging and a paperboard box with a lid, reflecting the rustic “homey” feel, and secured by two stickers. The box has a wooden pallet look on 3 sides and on the 4th it stills has that look but with a scenic picture of the mountains and a brief description of the company and candle. On the front panel there is a similar but altered logo of the Ole Smokey Moonshine label with the product descriptions written on a color blocked shape of the state of Tennessee. This is simplified and placed as a label on the candle jar as well. In store, the product would be displayed outside the box. The box provides a safe and cute place to protect the box until the candle has reached its destination.
